Reading and Homework

The children will become improved readers through our reading sessions where they will read books from The Monster Phonics reading scheme.

Monster Phonics Reading Book:

This book has been carefully matched to your child's current reading level. Please listen to them read the book and remember to give them lots of praise - celebrate their success! If they can't read a word, read it to them. After they have finished talk about the book together. This book will have been read 3 times with their teacher in school that week. You will recieve the ebook version of the book which is accessible on a tablet, phone and laptop. This is free to access! The details of this book  are written down each week in your child's reading log so you know which ebook to read with your child. (The children are also invited to choose a levelled book to take home for additional practice. They are encouraged to swop these for a new one whenever they wish.)

Sharing Book:

In order to encourage your child to become a life long reader, it is important that they learn to read for pleasure. The sharing books are books which they have chosen for you to enjoy together. Please remember that you shouldn't expect your child to read these alone. Read it to or with them. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, and explore the facts in a non fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!

Please click on the E-Books Parents Guide document below to sign up for the free ebooks to support your child at home.

Please click below on the Year 2 Common Exception Words for spelling and reading which Year 2 are expected to learn to both read and spell. We have also provided the Year 1 list of words too.

We really encourage the children to read regularly at home and would ask that you sign their Reading Logs when they do. We will reward the children for every 10, 20, 50 and 100 times their reading log is signed by you and they will achieve a coloured Reading Star Award!

Maths Homework

Each week the children are given maths homework relating to the learning they are doing in class. We also provide online homework booklets for each unit of maths which are published by the White Rose Maths Scheme which we use in school. These can be used as a point for discussion and do not have to be printed off and returned to school. Please see below for the documents.

Times Tables

By the end of Year 2 the children should have rapid recall of the 2, 5 and 10 times tables; this means when a times table question is asked they should be able to answer within 2 seconds without needing to count in 2s, 5s or 10s. Scroll down for games which you can play at home.

Here are some fun, online games.

Here are some songs & videos to help your child learn their times tables.

PE

2HR and 2H will have their PE on a Friday afternoon. For this they will need a PE kit in school so that the children can get changed into their kit in school. This should comprise of a grey school t-shirt, black shorts and pumps or trainers. If you should wish then you can also include black jogging bottoms and an appropriate jumper for when the weather gets colder as they will still go outside unless there is heavy rain. Please remember that no jewellery can be worn during PE lessons.

Snack

We ask that you provide a healthy snack (no sweets, chocolate or fizzy drinks) for your child each day which could be fruit, crackers, or rice cakes for example. Please also send a named water bottle into school with your child every day.

Dropping off and picking up

All children need to be dropped off at their classroom doors between 8:45 and 9:00am, when the registers will close. Children arriving after 9:00am will have to go to the office to sign in. At 3:15pm, class 2H leave through main door on the Key Stage 1 playground, whereas class 2HR will leave through their classroom door.

Other

Whilst we try our best to ensure each child comes home with their own belongings, could we politely ask that all items of clothing are clearly labelled to ensure they are returned to the correct child. We also kindly ask that children do not bring any extra items into school from home at this time, such as pencil cases or toys.

We hope your child will enjoy their time with us in Year 2, however if you have any queries then please do not hesitate to phone or email the office to discuss or to arrange a time to chat with your child’s teacher. Please ensure your contact details are up to date at the school office and notify them of any changes.

Thank you for your support.
