Year 4 2022 - 2023
Additional PE session - Thursday 8th June
Children should bring their PE kit to school in a named bag to change into prior to the session.
Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check - Wednesday 7th June - Friday 16th June
This is a statutory check for all Year 4 pupils across England to support the identification of any child who requires additional support mastering their multiplication tables to support them as they progress in their education.
PE for both classes is on a Wednesday afternoon.
Children should come dressed in the school PE Kit (grey t- shirt, black shorts or joggers and suitable footwear) for these sessions.
Homework is sent home once a week.
The children are encouraged to complete their homework every week and this is rewarded with Dojo points. If parents or children are unsure of how to complete the homework then please speak to the Year 4 staff.
Each week the activities provided will support the consolidation of learning that has taken place within the classroom. Activities may include: spelling, Maths or Writing.
Reading
As a school, we encourage all children to read at least 3 times at home and record this in their reading log. The children are rewarded with dojo's certificates, books and special visits to Mrs Jones (Principal) for doing this.
To help the children to read effectively, we have been teaching them to read with fluency by adhering to the pauses in the text, using intonation and not rushing through. We want each child to enjoy reading for pleasure, whether this is non-fiction, information books magazines or comics. It’s just important that they like what they are reading and most of all have fun!
Times Tables
In June, the Year 4 children are assessed on their times table knowledge. It is important that the children learn to quickly recall as many times table as they can because this will help prepare them for year 5 and 6. As so many elements of maths rely on it, having a secure knowledge of the times tables is really important. Each morning, the children practise their times table during early doors. They also enjoy watching times table songs on YouTube and playing games such as daily 10 and hit the button. When practising at home, try to ensure that the children can recall facts out of their correct order.

The children all have a Times Table Rock Stars login and can compete against the teachers and each other! If you have any problems logging in then please let us know.
Spelling
It is important that the children learn the year 3 and 4 spelling words and spelling patterns and apply this knowledge in their writing. Spellings are always part of the homework sheet.
Any additional support with these spelling would be greatly received. The children enjoy using different techniques to learn the spellings, such as pyramid words, look cover write and underlining the tricky parts of the words.
Dojos
In year 4 we use ClassDojo as a behaviour management tool. Each child has their own avatar in the form of a little monster. Children can earn Dojo points by demonstrating positive behaviour both in class and around the school, such as working hard, helping others and following the class/school values. However, children can also lose points for such not following instructions, breaking school rules or not listening.
Each class sets themselves a target number of dojo's to achieve each term and are rewarded with a prize of their choice for reaching this.
All of the children have the opportunity to visit Mrs Jones regularly to share their achievements and for reading 10, 20, 50, 115 times, they can win a book.
