Year 6 2025 - 2026
Remote learning - Tuesday January 6th
We hope you are having lots of fun enjoying the snow, whether that’s building snowmen or keeping warm indoors! In between the winter activities, here are a few learning tasks to keep your brain active ahead of our return to school tomorrow:
Maths
-
Times Tables Rock Stars – we’ve set up a 24-hour battle between 6J and 6HE. Who will reign victorious? Log on and help your class get the victory!
-
You can also practise your times tables using these interactive games on Topmarks:

Arithmetic Challenge
Have a go at these arithmetic question, just like a Year 6 arithmetic test. Bring your answers to school tomorrow and either Mr Jones or Mrs Hardwick will check them for you.

5⁄6 − 1⁄3 =
- 3² + 4³ =
-
6 × (18 − 11) =
-
2.5 × 40 =
- 3,528 ÷ 27 =
Reading +
-
Please log on to Reading+ and work through one of the texts. We will be regularly checking to see if anyone has been placed on hold. If you have, please check back later once we has released you.
Writing
-
We would love you to write a short recount about your two and a half weeks off for Christmas. Think carefully about the grammatical structures we have practised in school, with a real focus on fronted adverbials for time and place. Remember, a recount is written in the past tense, so tenses are really important.
D&T
-
Design and create your own snowman (or snow animal). Get creative; we would love to see your finished designs!
Spring term overview
This half term, our Year 6 children will be taking part in an extended school day, finishing at 4:00pm, to support and strengthen their preparation for the upcoming SATs. Our foundation subjects this half term will focus on the British Empire, allowing children to deepen their historical understanding and make meaningful links across their learning. We are excited about the progress the children will make and everything they will achieve over the course of this half term.

Welcome to Year 6!
In Year 6, we have three classes:
Class 6J - Mr Jones
Class 6HE - Mrs Hardwick and Mrs Evans
The classes are supported by Mrs Dodgson, Mrs Quarterman and Mrs Smart
As we embark on this exciting journey into the new academic year, we are thrilled to be welcoming your children into what will be their last year here at Underwood West.
Year 6 is a place of growth, curiosity, and creativity, and we are committed to providing a stimulating and nurturing environment for your child's educational journey. To ensure smooth sailing and maximise learning opportunities, we would like to share some important information:
PE
PE lessons will take place every Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure your child arrives at school in their full school uniform and brings their PE kit to change into before the lesson. This will ensure they are prepared for physical activities and have a fantastic time while staying fit.
Staying hydrated
We encourage children to bring their water bottles to school each day. Proper hydration is vital for maintaining focus and energy levels. These water bottles should go back home at the end of each day in order to be washed ahead of the next day.
Healthy eating
In our effort to promote a healthy and positive learning environment, we kindly request that children refrain from bringing fizzy drinks and chocolate to school. Instead, we encourage them to opt for healthier choices to fuel their growing minds and bodies.
Reading
We encourage all children to read at least three times a week. The class teacher will be checking this regularly, and we promise special prizes from Mrs. Jones for those who read 10, 20, 50, and even 100 times throughout the year.
Uniform
We believe that a smart appearance fosters a sense of pride in our children here at Underwood West. We kindly request that children wear exemplary school uniforms, including completely black footwear (these can be trainers). Our dress code consists of grey or black trousers, a white or grey polo shirt, and a purple school jumper.
We can't wait for a year filled with fun, growth, and unforgettable moments. We look forward to building a strong partnership with you, as parents and guardians, to ensure the best possible experience for your child.
Feel free to reach out to us with any questions or concerns you may have along the way. Let's make this a fantastic year together!
The Year 6 team.
