Modern Foreign Languages
At Underwood West, we believe that learning a foreign language is an essential part of a well-rounded education. Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and is a valuable skill for children to acquire. Our Spanish curriculum is designed to introduce students to the Spanish language and culture, and to develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.
Intent and Implementation
Our Spanish curriculum is based on the National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages and is taught in a way that is engaging, interactive, and fun. We aim to create a positive and supportive learning environment where all students feel confident and motivated to participate in language learning.
In lower Key Stage Two, students will learn basic vocabulary and phrases through songs, games, and stories. They will develop their listening and speaking skills by practicing pronunciation and engaging in simple conversations. As they progress through the program, they will begin to read and write in Spanish, and learn about Spanish culture and customs.
By the end of upper Key Stage Two, students should be able to:
- Understand and respond to simple instructions and questions in Spanish.
- Speak in simple sentences and hold basic conversations in Spanish.
- Read and understand simple texts in Spanish.
- Write simple sentences and short paragraphs in Spanish.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Spanish culture, including holidays, customs, and traditions.
Our Spanish curriculum is designed to support and enhance students' overall learning and development. By learning a new language, students will develop their cognitive skills, develop cultural awareness and acquire a greater understanding and appreciation of different languages and cultures.
