Phonics screening

The Phonics Screening Check (PSC) is a statutory assessment taken in Year 1 consisting of 40 words, including pseudo (nonsense) words, that pupils have to read out. Teachers administer the test to each pupil individually and mark them according to whether they decode each work correctly. As you know, here at Underwood West we introduce our Monster Phonics scheme in nursery and this runs right through up to Year 2. To remain in line with the DfE, children will take a phonics screening test during the summer term. Prior to this, children will have short half termly assessments to ensure progression and add additional support as and when required.
